Blackfish is a damning Oscar-nominated documentary about Seaworld, the amusement park where killer whales (and other sea life) do tricks for fun. The story follows one killer whale, Tilikum, who is involved in the deaths of 3 people, but at no point do you blame the whale: instead you hate Seaworld. This film doesn’t even pretend to be unbiased – it has a company whose actions need exposing and it does so very effectively. Viewing the film you see the ridiculous conditions these animals live in, and how this can lead them to do extreme things. But it is also about more than just the way it treats its preforming animals – it looks into how Seaworld treats its staff (hint: it’s badly).
My friend, a marine biologist who is in love with killer whales, saw this film before me and begged me to see it. I am so glad I did, even if it is desperately sad. I would urge you to see it as well, if only so it will discourage you from ever going to Seaworld.
